How to Convert a PDF Bank Statement to Excel
Copying a bank statement from a PDF into Excel by hand takes hours. Converting it gives you rows and columns you can total, filter and use in a pivot table.
Steps
- If the statement is password-protected, open it in Chrome, enter the password, then choose Print → Save as PDF. This saves a copy without a password that still contains text. (The Unlock PDF tool saves pages as images, which PDF to Excel cannot read.)
- Open PDF to Excel and select the statement.
- Choose One sheet per page or All pages in one sheet. One sheet is easier for totals.
- Tap Convert to Excel and open the .xlsx file.

- Delete header and footer rows that repeat on every page. Use a filter on the Date column to find them quickly.
- Amounts like 12,500.00 are turned into real numbers, so you can use SUM right away.
- If a description is split across two rows, join it with =A2&" "&A3 or just edit it.
- Insert a Pivot Table to see spending by month or by category.
Limits
Rows and columns are detected from where the text sits on the page, which works well for digital statements. Scanned statements are pictures and contain no text, so they cannot be converted this way.
